Hammonds, Alfred D. (P2, C4, L41)
Private First Class Alfred D. Hammonds, 39, of Somerset, Pulaski County, died on February 5, 1945 of non-battle related causes while serving with Service Company, 149th Infantry Regiment, 38th Infantry Division in the Philippines.
Hammonds enlisted in Company B of the 149th in at the age of 18 in January 1924. Hammonds rose to the rank of Sergeant while serving with Company B. He was ordered to active duty with his unit on 17 January 1941. He had completed two years of high school and was working in construction. He was the son of George and Eliza Eads Hammonds of Somerset. So far, research has not revealed when he moved to Service Company or any further information about where he was serving in the Philippines or his duties at the time of his death. However the 149th had just landed on Luzon and were preparing for the Zig Zag Pass battle.
Hammonds is buried in Plot A, Row 15, Grave 202 in the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.
